Stitch of Hope Percikla’s Journey from the Kiln to Her Calling

Percikla, the daughter of Abass — a hardworking brick kiln laborer — grew up under the harsh sun and heavy burdens of kiln life. From her earliest memories, she was surrounded by smoke, sweat, and the sound of clay being molded into bricks. Life was never easy. Each day began before sunrise and ended long after sunset, filled with exhausting labor and little room for rest, let alone dreams.

But even in the dust and hardship, Percikla nurtured a quiet hope. She longed to break free from the generational cycle of poverty and hardship that had bound her family for decades. Her dream was simple, yet powerful — to learn sewing and build a better future for herself and her family.

One day, she heard about the Good Samaritan Sewing Centre in Zaman Park. It was like a light breaking through the darkness. Despite her long shifts at the kiln, she made a courageous decision: she would not let exhaustion steal her dream. After her laborious work at the kiln, she would walk to the centre, tired but unwavering in determination.

The journey wasn’t easy. There were times when her arms ached too much to hold a needle, when family pressures pulled her back, and when the slow pace of learning tested her patience. But at the Sewing Centre, she found more than just skills — she found hope, encouragement, and a community that believed in her.

The trainers recognized her determination and supported her every step of the way. Their belief in her gave her strength to continue, even when she felt like giving up.

Percikla completed her sewing course with grace and dignity. After completing her training, the Good Samaritan Society for Development and Rehabilitation gifted her a brand-new sewing machine. With this blessing, Percikla started her own small sewing business right from her home.

Today, she is no longer carrying bricks under the blazing sun. Her hands, once cracked and worn by clay, now craft garments with care and beauty. Her earnings help support her household and inspire other young girls in her community to believe in their own dreams.

Percikla’s story is a powerful reminder that with opportunity, support, and faith, even the most oppressed lives can be transformed. She is living proof that a stitch of hope is all it takes to begin a new chapter.

“This sewing machine is not just a gift — it is my freedom. I thank God and the Good Samaritan Society for believing in me. Now I can dream for my future and help others do the same.” — Percikla
